Angamaly Diaries is bound to set off a whole new dimension to Malayalam film making. It is a coming of age movie by Amen fame Lijo Jose Pellissery. The movie offers a pleasant and peppy change from the ordinary Mollywood films. Previously many Mollywood flicks have explored the scenic beauty of Idukki but now it is the turn of Angamaly to come up to the forefront with its mouth-watering delicacies and the energetic youth who are literally on fire. This is a movie were each and every character plays a pivotal role and are exceptional. As the director so rightfully said, “The hero is the story and not the people.” Angamaly Diaries tells us the story of a young man and his gang and the extremely unexpected set of events that happen in their life and thereby changing everything surrounding them. The film is known to have eighty six newcomers but their performance say an entirely different story as everyone in the movie was a treat to the eyes and ears.
The movie starts off with a flash back and it tells us the story of Vincent Pepe played by Antony Varghese and his gang which includes knockout characters like Bheeman, Parippu Marty and kanakuna Marty. Pepe had always wanted to start a gang and his inspiration was Babuji, a local goon who was also a good friend. Soon Pepe forms his own gang and the movie shows the interesting developments that happen during the different stages of his life. In the beginning the Palliyangadi gang, which was their name, encounter petite problems but then things turn serious when matters go out of hand and there is commotion, police and a lot of tension in the air.
What is truly great is the depiction of everything in a raw way without tarnishing anything. There is love, both falling in and out of it, there is craziness, fight and a whole lot of noisy commotion and everything has been portrayed in a way that is out of the Earth. By the end of the first half, the audience is left gripping their seats and biting their nails anxious about what is going to happen. From the beginning till the end the movie never fails in keeping its audience engaged. The way the actors handled their roles in the most realistic and natural way is commendable. The 86 debutantes are sure to find a place in the hearts of Malayalis.
The technicality of the film is outstanding and Gireesh Gangadharan has done magic with his camera. The eleven minute single shot climax scene is the highlight of Angamaly Diaries. The sound effects and the background score deserves an applause. Throughout the film the viewers were wondering how, not some but most of the scenes, were shot because obviously everything was done with perfection. Chemban Vinod Jose as a debutante writer has also done an amazing job in capturing the essence of Angamaly in his story. Lijo Jose Pellissery has accomplished something incredible and gifted the Malayali audience a delicious Angamaly feast that will not be in any way forgotten easily.
