Tharangam marks one of the best fantasy based subjects in Mollywood and thanks to producer Dhanush for making an entry with an entirely different project. Directed by Dominic Arun, who has directed the wonderful noir short film Mrithyunjayam, makes his entry into big screen with Tharangam and the talent he has is clearly applied on the screen with the movie. Though the trailer or teaser or the posters were never given any glimpse of a fantasy, the very first shot establishes the element of fantasy in the movie. There is no doubt that Dominic Arun has lot in his hand to amaze Mollywood in the future.
Tharangam begins on a fantasy mode at Paradise where Kallan Pavithran’s entire generation are cursed for the deeds of Kallan Pavithran. And then God gives him the advice how to get rid of the curse. Meantime in earth Pappan and Joy, working in traffic police went on an undercover operation which took a wrong turn and they get suspended and the rest forms the crux of the story. Tovino portraits Pappan, a fun-filled character who is struggling through his suspension period. Pappan marks his yet another thrilling character after the successful movies Godha and Oru Mexican Aparatha. Balu comes as Joy with a lot of moments stealing the show with a good chemistry with Tovino. The immense sense of humor is handled in a natural way by them and that really amazed the audience. Santhy Balachandran looks cute and acts well.
By instituting the fantasy element at the beginning of the movie, the director has reduced the complexity of the story which we usually see in Priyadarshan movies. All those hurry-burry and fecund sequences are shot in a different angle and that is what makes the real difference. The supporting actors did a great job including Neha Iyer, Vijayaraghavan, Manoj K Jayan, Shammi Thilakan, Sijoy, Saiju Kurupp, Dileesh Pothen and Alencier. The entry of Unni Mukundan was unexpected and completely massive.
From the technical side this entirely different movie gets a warm support by all means. The script done by Dominic Arun and Anil Narayanan bear an important role in the making. They have earlier worked together for the script of Style. The camera work by Deepak D Mohan is highly impressive. All the shots are unique and he marks his signature in every shot. Surely he is going to the mainstream within no time. Ashwin Renju has awe-struck all with the composing and the song ‘Minnunnude’ is already in the hit chart. The BGM is also noble. Sreenath S has edited in the perfect way to meet both fantasy and realism at the exact point without any sort of dullness. Tharangam would really win your hearts if you aspire for change and the movie is an inspiration for those who aims to make the challenges with the making. The movie is a must watch and don’t miss it on the big screen.
